Souper Bowl of Caring

February 11 @ 10:30 am 11:30 am

Celebrate 34 Years of Caring

In 1990, a young seminary intern named Brad Smith was praying with the youth group of Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina. He said, “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat.”

Since then, donations have been collected by churches and scouting groups across the nation. This will be Westwood First’s sixth year collecting to help our community through the Souper Bowl of Caring.

Although this Souper Bowl started with a focus on food, many people also need the plain comforts of life.

We will again collect goods for the WestFed Food Pantry, a cooperative effort of six Westwood/Cheviot area churches (Cheviot United Methodist, Grace Lutheran, JOY Community, St. Catharine of Siena, St. James Episcopal, and Westwood First Presbyterian) and the Gamble Nippert YMCA. This year, WestFed needs paper products — toilet paper, paper towels, facial tissues — as well as shampoo, bars of soap, and toothpaste.

Last year, for the first time, Westwood also collected for BLOC Ministries, specifically Weightless Anchor ( Weightless Anchor serves women who are struggling with addiction and those who are victims of the sex-trade industry. Their facilities offer “rest, showers, hot meals, free clothes, and hygiene products, and most importantly, love without a cost.” This year, they would appreciate personal-size hygiene products and paper products.

Cash is also appreciated. Imagine if everyone attending the NFL Super Bowl donated just one dollar! To give to either of this year’s recipients, please put your donation in an envelope with your name and “Souper Bowl of Caring” on the outside.

We will be collecting January 21 through February 11. Look for the boxes in the Narthex!

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:19–21, New King James Version
